I've never heard anything but good about elk hide...supposed to be soft, strong and supple. Sounds like excellent sporran material. Guess that the journey to the trading post enhances the whole sporran making eperience...nothing like picking it out yourself.
Now...did you haggle or just pay the asked price?
You've got to keep your haggling in practice, you know.
