    2007 Kiltmaking classes in AZ,UT,NY,CA

Elsie Stuehmeyer sent me the following information, at my request, for the kiltmaking classes she will be putting on in 2007.

So, you lucky dogs in Arizona, Utah, New York and surroundings, and (maybe) California who need some stern hand-holding as you spend five days building your own 8-yard traditional kilt (aka, a "tank"), send me a PM and I'll get the contact information for the class sponsors so you can settle dates and sign up.

Elsie is the instructor, not the sponsoring organization. The sponsor does all the logistical work and pays the instructor, including travel, room and board. The "your people" she refers to come from my telling her about regional groupings of XMarksTheScot members around the USA and the world. This forum was a new thing to her. Who knew there was such a group of (obsessed, fanatic, rabid, addicted, U-pick adjective) of kilt wearers, many of whom have also been infected with the drive to make their own kilt(s)?

Back to business. In the case of those in proximity to the San Fransisco Bay Area, there is a sponsor opportunity on the table already. However, she is suggesting that if ten XMarkers (and any other interested parties) commit to a five-day kiltmaking session, she would consider a proposal.

Now is the time for all good men to... become a man-and-a-half.

And don't forget the Kilt Kamp in June 2007 in Victoria, British Columbia. The five-day kiltmaking session scheduled there is to be instructed by Barbara Tewksbury (and Barb doesn't rap your knuckles with a ruler if you use pins!)

    Kilt on!

    *grrr*

By next summer I'm going to be done with all the traditional kilts that I want to make, I think. That and I'm pretty keen to make it to 2007 Kilt Kamp in Victoria if it works out with an important sailing race I've got.

There's only so much vacation time....sighing. But believe me, I'd LIKE to go to one.

    W2F,
A PM has already been sent. While I want to go to the Victoria Kilt Kamp, one that's in-state may fit my schedule better.
And after the cotton, duck, canvas, and hemp/cotton kilts are finished, I may be ready to attempt wool.

2007 Kilt Kamp. Oh I would love to be there but I think I have finals that week! It's either finals or graduation. I suppose I could always skip graduation , I mean, it's not like I don't plan on taking my education farther!

Elsie holds a great course! I incourage anyone who can make it to find the time and funds.

That said, Kilt Kamp is still on. Not only will you have Barb teaching Traditional Kiltmaking but I will be there to help people work on a Contemporary Kilt. Hopefully Alan can make it for hints and tips on his X Kilt.
Bear has expressed interest in being there to help folks who wish to know more about Casual Kilts.
I still haven't firmed up a commitment with Matt Newsome but what a treat if we could get him to come also.

By fall of next year there should be no excuse for not being able to make your own kilt if you really want to. Attend Elsie's course or come to Victoria. Your choice. But attend one of them.

I guess this works unless you're left-handed with a needle.

In my first post on this thread, I should have added the annual kiltmaking session in South Lake Tahoe which begins the first weekend in August.

I have requested the sponsor details from Elsie for all the classes listed in the first post. Elsie has asked for a little time to gather the info and transcribe it into an email. (She claims her computer skills are a distant second to her kiltmaking skills.)

There is a small discussion regarding practioners of the left-handed arts in "The Art of Kiltmaking." As I recall, the conclusion was try to do whatever you can that works.

Of course, I see nothing wrong (just non-traditional) with making a kilt with ALL the pleats going the reverse direction. In that case, every direction, measurement, and stitch called for in the book could be mirror-imaged. What's not to like about a left-handed kilt? Needless to say, pictures are absolutely required.
