Ah, Highlander- what other movie in the world has a Scot playing an Egyptian with a Spanish name that carries a Japanese sword and a Frenchman playing a Scot? One of my favorite movies still. I loved Braveheart despite the inaccuracies (and the ignorami who keep telling me that that movie is why I wear a kilt) but I think Highlander would probably still be my favorite.

Actually Christopher Lambert was born in the USA!
His father was a diplomat and he spent his childhood in Geneva, Switzerland.

I'd watch Rob Roy again right now . . . for the 25th time. I use it with my students often, adn they always like it, too.

Haven't seen Tunes of Glory yet, but I will order it directly.

And I love Braveheart whether "real Scots" do or not. I go to history books for history, movies for entertainment. And this is one of the best made movies around, very entertaining. It also serves as a springboard for further discussions about the actual historical facts.

I'll agree with thescot's mindset on Braveheart. It IS a great story, and there is history in there... costumes aside. This could prompt a more inquisitive mind to go and read up on the actual history, which is never a bad thing.

Rob Roy is a good one too... I love the musical score (the Liam Neeson film. He tends to pop up in a lot of "sword movies"). I remember seeing a much older Rob Roy movie, when I was much younger. My parents had it, but I cannot for the life of me find it, or remember who made it. I almost want to say Disney, but I don't think they ever touched it. It might have been PAL format, from when we were living over there... I wish my memory could stretch a little father back.

This could prompt a more inquisitive mind to go and read up on the actual history, which is never a bad thing.

As a history teacher and park ranger at a National Battlefield, I can tell you that this doesn't happen that much -- we're usually left cleaning up the mess from historical movies, although a few good ones (where Hollywood actually does their research!) do slip through.

I had never heard of "Callan". I enjoyed Edward Woodward's american television series "The Equalizer" about a retired spy who helps the helpless.

To be honest it was a mediocre show in terms of writing, but they managed to get Woodward and a host of other fine actors that made the show worth watching.

It sounds oddly similar having Woodward playing a former spy in in a second series after "Callum", to Patrick McGoohan being in "Secret Agent" and then "The Prisoner".
