box-pleated great kilt
Here's a European print of Scottish soldiers serving on the Continent ca. 1740's (the descriptions are in French and German), which clearly shows the belted plaid as worn historically. Note the pleating is in the form of wide box-pleats. This has often intrigued me. How did they achieve that pleating configuration with a non-tailored plaid? You can't do it with the usual modern reenactor's method of spreading it out on the ground and hand pleating it towards you. That results in knife-type pleats. So how did they do it?! Drawstrings a la Matt Newsome's research? I've noted the same type box-pleats in other clear period images of belted plaids....
