Stripe/Sett dilemma

...a little repetition here...but I'm sure that you won't mind.

So....the kilt that I ordered from Tartanweb arrived today. This one was orerdered on November 15 and I asked for delivery by December 22 so that I would have something new and special to wear for the holidays. The Tartan is Campbell of Cawdor...a nice dark tartan (love dark) and matches the shawl that I bought my wife last Christmas so that we could look as if we were together...if she'd ever wear the damn thing...but that's another story...

Five yard Strome Campbell of Cawdor and it is excellent. Love the material, the five yards looks and feels slim...which is what I wanted. Craftsmanship is really really good and it fits like the proverbial glove. I am henceforth spoiled and now I want at least two more of these in different tartans...I now know what happens when you get that Strome monkey on your back.

And I am really screwed up here because I had asked for it to be pleated to the red stripe and they pleated it to the sett. I figured that the red stripe would break up the total darkness of the whole thing just enough that it wouldn't look sort of monolithic.

So what's a po' boy to do. This is sort of like the "if you want someone to take a puppy, ask them to watch it for you overnight" scenario...I have it in my hands and it looks fabulous (the pleating to the sett is immaculate, I might add) and I have it for the holidays but I had asked for the stripe...

...you never said that the kilted life would be this difficult! Why didn't you guys warn me?

I appreciate the sentiment but I don't think this is like that pizza thing: thirty minutes or it's free.

Better yet tell them they are flying you out to supervise the making of the kilt so that you know it is done to the stripe. Just try and time it so you can hit the Burns night at Ferintosh

Disclaimer... I'm not defending them and I don't know their policies and not sure how well they communicated with you prior to your order being finalized, BUT...

When we (USAK) make a 5 yarder, the customer does NOT get an option of pleating to the sett or stripe (many places have this as a policy for their 4 or 5 yarders). Reason: Since the kiltmaker is dealing with a smaller ammt of material (compared to an 8 yarder), we have to pleat it up "the best we can" to make the kilt fit within the alloted material length. Most times, this means pleating it to the 1/2 sett or something that LOOKS like the sett. If you MUST have a kilt to the stripe the pleats may end up being 2" wide (depending on the sett size... ask MacSimoin) on a 5 yarder.

That being said, they should have told you that pre-finalizing the order or sent you an email informing you that it wouldn't be done to the stripe to give you the option of backing out or having wide pleats.

I would call them and tell them there is a mistake, and see what they tell you. They should make it right, if that means offereing you a discount on the one you have and keeping it that works, if it means sending it back and having them send you a new one then you have a decision to make. I wouldn't take the basting stitches out until you talk with them though.
