Thanks for the support buddy. Something the kid does not seem to understand is that when most Americans are met with opposition to something they are doing they really do not care what anyone else thinks. And some of us do it more just out of spite.

Yep, that's the truth. We're a stubborn lot, we are.
As to whether or not Americans or other "not Scots" can wear a kilt:
I'm not accusing anybody here of this, but I've seen some people complain about the fact that kilts are often considered costumes, then turn around and try and impose all sorts of restrictions on it. My take on it is that if a garment must be worn in a certain manner, and must be accompanied by certain accessories, and is restricted to only certain people, then it is not general clothing, it is a uniform. If a uniform is worn by someone not entitled to wear it, then it is a costume.
One needs only to look at the range of new kilt styles and accessories to see that the general opinion amongst those who wear kilts (not just us here) are that they are clothing, not costume. Any man looks good in a kilt. That little girl from Glasgow is in the minority. I'm a balding man the size of a small car, and I get hit on like I was Brad Pitt when I go out in my kilt. If any Glasgow teeny bopper thinks she can influence my decision to wear the kilt after that, she's got rocks in her head. Then again, she is a teenager, and I'm not so old that I can't remember the rocks that used to dwell in my head...

That quite nicely sums me up as well.
My wife (and others) tell me that there is nothing more attractive than a man in a kilt. That is enough for me! As for what others think?? I am not trying to impress them, I am trying to be myself.

Interesting thread this one is! I'm glad to see it back (and in it's edited form... thank you ) Anyway, being that I'm almost 25, I must admit that I've not been "with it" since before I was in high school. I wear suits often and for no reason, and when I got my great kilt I wear it when I like... though it's a pain to put on so I don't wear it much. I am in the process of getting a regular kilt and once I have that I'll wear it often. I have been a thorn in my parents sides because of my fashion... I don't dress like my peers. I'd rather dress in fashon that I like, what's more I get more complements from people then one would think. Just wearing suits and looking like I stepped from the 1920's has made girls at the grocery store move to the line I'm in just to stand behind me. I'll have to beat them off with a stick when I have my kilt. (that happens also when I'm in my belted plaid). That girl from Glasga needs to brush up on what's "hip."

I would far rather she was born in Hawaii as I would get far better summer holidays.
The kilt is not purely Scottish it is for anyone that wants to wear it. To say it is purely Scottish would be like saying that jeans are purely American. Tosh!!!!!
Wear it when you like and where you like and with what you like.
A previous poster mentioned that wearing it a certain way is like a uniform. I see what you mean but I do wear it in a traditional manner to some events (weddings etc.) but I wear it casually other times. I really do think there is a place for the "traditionalist" wearing of a Scottish Highlandwear outfit but it is not the ONLY way.

Oh, certainly. My point was that demanding that any time a kilt is put on, the wearer must also don hose, flashes, sporran, sgian dubh, dirk, PC jacket, ghillie brogues, and a Balmoral or Glengarry hat is sporking ridiculous. I think that a formal kilt outfit has a place-formal affairs. If I had the money and places to wear one, I'd probably have a PC outfit.
There are a lot of traditions in kilt wearing, and some of them seem to boil down to "rules." However, like any fashion "rules" the ones surrounding kilt wearing can be broken safely as long as you know what you're doing. I've worn my kilt in ways that might give some of our more traditionalist members fits of apoplexy (or more likely laughter...either way). For example, if I had a picture, I would post it to the "do's and don'ts" thread of one of my favorite outfits of the past few years: great kilt with sandals, tank top, and baseball cap-right along with spiked collar and claw ring. As with any other item of clothing, one should know the traditions associated with it before deciding how to wear it.
Of course, this is all just my opinion- and I've been a fashion rulebreaker for years. In junior high I had the hairdo that David bowie wore in Labyrinth.
