Muskrat Sporran

As I posted on another thread, my son Jim got his first kilt for Christmas this year. Now we have set to work on his sporran. My friend Brian brought over a muskrat tonight. He skinned the little critter, scraped the hide, stretched and salted it. Now we just have to wait until it dries out.

I'll add a few updates and some pictures soon. Can't wait to see how this turns out. BTW, anyone ever seen a muskrat sporran before?

I have a coyote face that I thought about making into a sporran. My wife said that I was sick bast.....well you get the idea. She does not believe in using fur products. I still might do it, and put it up for sale. Only problem is leather is so freakin' exspensive!

MacWage made the suggestion of going to Goodwill and getting an old leather purse to use for the leather needed. I intend to follow that advice.

You can also find leather coats there cheap. That would give you more leather.

A friend of mine has one of L&M's; very nice.

leather is so freakin' exspensive!

If you're anywhere near one, make up your patterns, then take them and root through the scrap bins at a Tandy Leather store. I can usually do a sporran for about $30.00 in materials.

I checked out Garden Ridge today as well for scrap leather. The quality of the leather is moderate and may work for the back portion of the sporran. I will be checking out Hobby Lobby and Goodwill soon.

I managed to get an old leather coat from the St. Vincent de Paul in our town... for three dollars I have enough leather to make five sporrans!
It seems that I have now committed to accepting a deer hide from my brother to try my hand at tanning/finishing into another sporran. Perhaps you know someone who hunts?

OKay... I'll admit that I had planned to start making sporrans on a more regular basis for profiit. That being said, I will share this anyway. I found a guy on eBay that sells leather fairly cheap. I'll grant that most of what he sells is scrap, but for the quantity and quality, he's good to go. I recenly bought 17 sq. ft. of gray suede from him... set me back a total of $35 for the 17sq. ft.! His stiffer, heavier leathers are also fairly inexpensive.
