Practical question here: how did you keep the mosquitoes away from the more sensitive bits?

I have thought about hiking in a kilt, but I remember from previous experience that the JMT, for example, had quite a few mosquitoes and other nasties lurking in the woods. It was hard enough in pants, netting and with repellent.

Just keep on walking. Your legs are brushing against each other, so there's no problem with mosquitoes. And believe me, there were plenty of them in the Sierra! While I often had mosquitoes all over my arms and legs, I never had an issue with them "under my kilt." DEET works wonders as well.

Andrew, I assume that, when you donate your kilt to Bear, you'll be replacing it? With, that is, not merely another kilt, but another HIKING kilt? And that you've probably got plans to do some more long range walking kilted?

Definitely. I already know I want to finish the Long Trail in Vermont (I've hiked the first 100 miles three times; I just need to finish the last 200), the West Highland Way in Scotland, and the Camino de Santiago de Compostela in France and Spain. None of those are as long as what I've done, but it's almost time for me to start settling down and figuring out what I want to do with myself. Whatever I do, kilts and backpacking will figure in there somehow.

I have hiked several short parts of the Appilachian Trail in my Scout years. But now it would take me a couple of years to get back into hiking shape. But, It's still a lot of fun for day trips to the trail. I especially enjoy the Cunningham Falls area. (when the wannabe king isn't in residence at Camp David. ) Too many guns too close.

What, no Colorado Trail? If I could do a long trip, that's the one I'd do. It starts in my hometown of Durango down in the southwest corner of the state and winds its way up here to the Denver area. I'm a short distance hiker only, but I can tell you that the scenery at either end of that trail is some of the prettiest in the world.
