    Salted Hemp

Had our Christmas holidays on the East Coast. We took a pretty wild boat cruise to a remote island off the tip of the Freycinet peninsula to see a seal colony.

It was wet, bumpy, windy and salty but my hemp kilt by R Kilts really held out well. A year ago I would never have attempted such a trip kilted but the weight of the hemp RKilt made me pretty confident about doing it.

Naturally, I got a couple of compliments from other passengers.

Very nice shots, it must be an experience getting close enough to a kangaroo to feed it like that, but then again they are probably used to people.

So... The kilt was ah! salted and held up well?

Course it did. Hemp is highly resistant to salt water. I read that they used to make sails for the old tall ships out of hemp.

It should be noted, as a historical footnote, and as something to think about in the kilted tradition, that the corsairs and Barbary pirates would wear loose hemp skirts made from ragged sailcloth and much of their clothing was made from hemp. (As well as whatever was plundered or pillaged, like silk) On hot days at sea, their loose hemp skirts kept them cool, and allowed them a great deal of mobility climbing the rigging.

The modern hemp kilts are just a logical extension of that, and would probably do great out at sea.

    Oh. I forgot one thing.

    AAAAAAAARGH!
