Panache had told me stories of his tailor in San Jose who had converted a sports coat to an Argyll style jacket for a reasonable cost. After many months of no luck scouring the many thrift stores in San Francisco I finally found what I was looking for on eBay - a light colored tweed. Arriving with a stack of printouts from X-Marks, I spoke with Mrs. Thanh. She spent quite some time measuring, chalking, and pinning. We talked about sewing the outer pockets shut and raising the pocket flaps higher and about using the extra material to build the epaulets. The cutaway would be a problem because of the second buttonhole - a perfect tangent just wasn't possible but it was close. Fortunately she has a set of metal buttons on hand to replace the leather ones.

Price for the jacket on eBay with shipping: about $23. Price of the tailoring and a set of metal buttons: about $110.

If you're near San Jose, you can contact Mrs. Thanh at (408) 266-5507. She's getting used to guys in kilts in her shop

I agree - great job. The onl;y thing I'd have done differently wold be to close the single vent in back and open up the side seams 4 inches to allow the jacket to lie closer to the small of the back.

First rate work on the epaulets. I'd like to learn how to do them that well.

Should it not be a white, sequined, wide collared jumpsuit?

Here's the "PJ" (Prince Jamie) jacket Mrs Thanh did for me. She shortened the tails of this old tuxedo jacket, made epaulettes, and sewed up a slight rip in the pocket for around $85 (I provided the buttons for the epaulettes and replaced the others myself. The F-H.C.A.G. shortened the vest).

(I love this photo. I think this the best picture of myself I have ever had taken in my entire life)

I also recommend Mrs Thanh's shop.

She is in the Mervyn's Shopping center right off Blossom Hill (between Blossom Hill and Kooser).

I am on the look out for a charcoal grey jacket for her to convert.

Now if someone would post some close up pictures of gauntlet cuffs...

    Cheers

David's jacket looks wonderful. I love the little extra bit of material on the sleeves with the buttons. I hear my sewing machine calling me . . .

Finished looking at all threads. Kent your jacket is a beauty, too. You, Alan and Panache are lucky to have the skills of Mrs. Thanh available. You both look happy with the results. Thanks for sharing the pics.

Alan - I was checking out the site and it appears to have a bad link on this page.
    http://www.geocities.com/alanhsails/...t_jacket5.html

The link "Click Here" at the bottom has an extra "htt" at the beginning.

I for one would like to see more pictures of the project in progress. I'm a visual learner.

    Nice job.
