Kilts and Celtic music

In response to the 7Nations Roadkill reference, I feel that Roadkill was the album that signalled my growing dislike with their sound.

Oh, okay...I googled their albums since I had no idea what order or whatnot they came in or how many they had. The only albums I had ever listened to from them are Big Dog and Roadkill. I liked Big Dog a lot more than RoadKill but still liked Roadkill. Of course, I only have those two albums to compare their stuff to.

Does anyone know where I can purchase these albums, not 7 Nation stuff but other bands like Flogging Molly, Ceann, Young Dubliners, New Element, etc If anyone wanted to copy stuff...I'd gladly pay for shipping.

I liked the old Clan na Gael sound betther than the Seven Nations. I have that first album, and it is still kickin'. Whenever some guy pulls up beside me with drum-machine music blaring, I turn up Clan na Gael and smile.

You'd be surprised how many of my students have first endured and then enjoyed Celtic music.

Send me a private message and I can make copies of the stuff I have. 7Nations first album was 'Rain and Thunder' and it's more traditional sounding with little of the rock jam of the later albums. 'Old Ground' which came next was a strong release (my introduction to them), and 'Big Dog' of course has some really awesome tracks. Alas the wind really went out of their sails when 'Roadkill' came out. The album 'The Factory' just plain blows if you ask me. I totally gave up on them after that. Sadly, I wasn't too impressed with Neil Anderson's solo efforts either which is unfortunate because while he wasn't a great vocalist he had an interesting distinctive style. He sings 'Jerusalem Rap' on 'Big Dog' and on 'Old Ground' he sings the Burns poem put to music - 'Ye Jacobites.'

Here's one I haven't seen mentioned in this post, Scythian. I saw them this year and they were absolutely the highest energy, most entertaining band I have ever seen. Unfortunately, their two cd's didn't capture this at all. If you get a chance to see them play, don't miss it.

Don't know if any body thinks of Gaelic Storm and a local band in KC Mo The Elders. Wicked Tinkers also get the blood up and the feet moving.

For some reason the image of you blaring Celt-jams in response to crap music blaring out of someone else's car made me think of a similar situation of my own but the music I was blaring was surf-guitar. That thought in turn made me remember an awesome surf band from Tuscaloosa, Alabama called 'The Penetrators.' Interestingly enough, on the first 'Penetrators' album ('Kings of the High Speed Weekend') they have the first ever Celtic surf guitar song titled 'The Wind Beneath My Kilt.' That was followed up with another Celtic-flavored tune called 'Single-Malt Stomp' on their second album ('Locked and Loaded'). Talk about a weird train of thought association.

I remember in high school some kid was thumping the bass on his car stereo. But that's all he had. I turned my system on and cut right through him with a real loud jig (can't remember who it was that I played, but pipes and fiddle will cut through pounding rap like a knife through hot butter). Even though most of the kids that I hung out with hated it, they loved seeing the guy forcing his rap upon the world get his comeuppance. (I hung out with mostly metal types.) Anyway, the kid came up to me later and asked me how I did it, as he had just put $5000 in his sound system (he should have spent half as much and put some into his car-what a POS!). I told him that he needed more treble, because higher frequency sounds carry farther. He responded, naturally, that rap was all about bass. I told him he'd need better taste in music. (Did I mention I didn't like the kid much?) The only thing that would have made it better is if I'd been kilted back then. (How's that for bringing the post semi-on topic?)
