I have to tell you that I didn't have a single negative comment when out and about in my kilt this weekend. It's not because I'm so incredibly cool or good looking--I am neither--it's just the way things went.
Most of the people I encountered wanted to tell me about their Scottish relatives, heritage, envy, and/or admiration. And several asked where I'd left my bagpipes. (I don't play yet, but I simply said "at home" so as to end that part of the repartee.)
Nothing I like better than being kilted and talking to folks.

Hmm. Interesting choice of words. Considered the source and walked on. When I didn't give them any reaction they yelled louder and more insistently, and temporarily suspended their game of horseshoes. Same word, over and over. I walked on without comment. When I came back that way they were nowhere to be seen.
On a more positive note, hiking up a mountain in a kilt on a spring-ish day - this is what they were made for! Will never again hike any other way.

I all ways thought Queer was odd.
Wait for some people wearing a kilt is odd.

They don't know where the Yangtze is, they can't count change without a calculator, they think Cleopatra was a Negro. How can we expect them to recognize a kilt when they see it

You can't tell the difference between a dress and a Kilt, you must be stupid.

When I get the "Queer" or "Gay" or what have you comments, if I'm not able to ignore it, I tend to ask, "Why? Are you looking for a date?" It usually shuts 'em right up.

Which has become a line I can't wait to use! And if nobody recalls, Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert) uses it in the original highlander, when he gets arrested at the beginniing of the movie and one of the cops asks him if he is gay/queer, he replies "Why, are you cruising for a piece of a$$"!
