Funny story, I took my Stillwater to the tailor to be hemmed, and told him that I wanted it no longer than the middle of my knees. He said that's where its hitting you already! 
I'm only 5'7", and he had to take out a ruler to prove it to me. I guess it depends on body shape, where your navel is, and where you want the bottom to hit. I too would be in favor of some shorter length options, even if it added a couple of bucks to the kilt.
