Need garnet and yellow tartan
Hey,
I am searching for a tartan in my college colors. I went to Erskine College AND Erskine Seminary. The school colors are garnet and gold/yellow.
I am looking for a tartan I can use in relation to the school. I can't think of many/any garnet tartans at all. I figured I could use this great wealth of info here to see if I can find one in the ideal colors (garnet and yellow, ideally garnet with yellow striping).
Also, do any of mills use the reds for an Erkine tartan look dark enough to work for a garnet?
Any help for me out there?

You might try the Tartan Ferret. It has that colour picker option...

A good match if you're just considering color is the Dress McMillan sett in muted colors produced by House of Edgar in their 13oz. "Old and Rare" line. The yellow is a beautiful gold and the red is a really deep, rich, dark garnet color. You can see it here:

Note that this image is not a scanned swatch, but a computer-generated picture. The actual fabric is much better looking. See if you can find a swatch book and see it firsthand.
Cordially,
David

Tartan ferret allows for red and yellow, but not garnet/burgundy tones. It also does not account for mills' collouring.
Culloden is purple and yellow. It is on my list of "to gets" (it is the "official" MacBubba tartan).

Here is a link to actual fabric scans from House of Edgar's Old & Rare line:
http://www.tartanweb.org/range/house...old__rare.html
However, oddly enough, MacMillan Dress muted does not appear on that listing. But it is in their Old & Rare line, according to their own material. That means it should be in my swatch book at the museum, so I can double check when I get in this morning.
I, personally, would think the Erskine tartan might be a better choice to represent the school, given it's name, than just another tartan that happened to be close to the school colors.
Of course if you wanted to design a tartan for the school, the Erskine tartan woven in yellow and garnet would be an obvious choice.
(BTW, MacWage, I have a MacMillan dress neck tie hanging on the rack for sale in the museum gift shop that needs to get sold.....)

Erskine...
I have to second Matt's suggestion of the (dress) Erskine tartan, which was also worn by the pipes & drums of the Royal Scots Fusiliers:

Just FYI, I am able to confirm that Dress MacMillan muted is in House of Edgar's Old & Rare line of 13 oz cloth, and I do have a swatch here at the museum. Very nice shades, and the yellow is more of a mustardy-gold.

Now THAT is not a bad idea. I'll contact the school tomorrow!
