vintage U.S Military sporran?
Hey all,
I just picked up this vintage Horse hair sporran today and was wondering if anyone might have some info on it. I was told that it was possibly a U.S. military sporran but I have yet to ever see one quite like it. On the back is stamped Thomas "something" Glasgow, dated 1929. On the front is the American eagle with E PLURIBUS UNIM. It is in real good shape for it's age. The Patent leather insert on the front is cracking and the hair is a tad yellow but overall it's in great shape. I've sent it out to get cleaned and restored and also have that leather insert replaced.
If anyone has any info on it I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
Keith

I don't know anything about it, but it sure is cool!!
I would avoid replacing anything on it though as it may have some value and that might be destroyed by replacing parts.
It don't mean a thing, if you aint got that swing!!

Yeah, that's a great piece, and I wouldn't change a thing.

The Thomas is probably Thomas Gordon (and sons), a Glasgow kiltmaker (still there my tank was purchased in their shop) that at one time had major military contracts. On the other hand, no idea why the US emblem since a kilt was never part of any US uniform that late in history.

It's possible the US emblem was added at a later date either for personal purposes or for a unit pipe band. Just speculating here.

Was there a US Army pipe band in the 20s/30s?
Or at the Army Academy/West Point?
(A good question for our military experts-> HEY, CAJUNSCOT!!!!)

I don't know about the rest of the armed forces, but the United States Corps of Cadets Pipes and Drums were first formed in 1972.
