For better or worse, I admit I never expected to see a thread such as this on the kilting forums. It is truly incredible to read the amount and diversity of information and feedback being put forth thus far. Jews in Scotland centuries ago? Elvis at shul? Israeli tartans?

If I can learn enough about tartans and how they are designed, I would love to see an international tartan for Jews. There may not be a lot of us kilted, but my God, the special meaning this would have for so many. Thanks for bringing this up gilmore.

    First Attempt - Jewish Tartan

Here is my first attempt. Unfortunately, this is MUCH darker and muted than I expected the image to be, but I hope you get the general idea.

    Blue - sea and sky
    White - purity
(Blue and white together, as on the Israeli flag, represent a Jewish prayer shawl)
Red - blood that has been spilled over thousands of years of persecution and oppression
Gold - richness of culture and history, the promised land of Israel
Green - trees planted in Israel as the Jews have so many times turned a barren desert to a thriving nation.

(Moderators, I hope you can view this thread as a tartan discussion for a people, not a religious discussion.)

Looks like an interesting start though, IE. As far as colors go, If that is an image from House of Tartan's interactive weaver you can use photoshop's replace color feature to make it look different. (Provided you use photoshop.)

I can't speak for the mods, but that's how I view it.

I've been trying to make it look better via Photoshop, but it just isn't working. The way House of Tartans displays the graphic makes it difficult.

Try the scouts tartan generator instead, its a bit more user friendly.

I'll take a quick shot at it. I hope you don't mind if I go for a lighter blue to look more like the blue on the flag.

Edit: Here's a shot at it. Clickable thumbnail:

That's a little lighter. Thanks. It's still weird that the white looks so "dirty".
The thread count I used was:
    White-50
    Blue-20
    Yellow-10
    Red-6
    Green-4

Thanks for the Scouts link SnakeEyes. Never seen that before.

The reason the white looks dirty is that the base of the picture is a black "grid" of sorts that outlines the simulated threads. In an actual weave, there would be no black.

That is an interesting article. Do we know if the Jewish Legion ever wore kilts as part of its uniforms?

A Presley tartan is one thing, but an ELVIS Presley commemorative tartan would have to make use of his favorite color combination, black and pink.
