I chose not to wear a kilt while flying down and back from Florida recently because of the security thing, and also, the cramped seating; getting into my seat, and getting out. Upon my return journey, I'd have been seated for too long with ice pellets closing the airport and hence delaying departures from Ronald Reagan.

During one of my shore excursions, I had gone ashore wearing one of my kilt-front wraps, and upon returning to the ship and passing through their scanners, security asked me what I had underneath. I told him nothing. He asked again what I had under my wrap. I said, "Nothing!" and lifted it up for him to see. I was in fact, regimental. (It was a clothing optional cruise so I wasn't concerned at anyone around me seeing that I was regimental.) I was confused as to what he wanted from me. Other security officers in the vacinity laughed and he seemed to be surprised/shocked at me showing him, but what did he expect? He told me to pass on through. What did he suspect? I'd already gone through the metal detectors. ???

At another time, I did pass through the scanners with buckles and didn't set off the alarm. One point of consideration though; kilt pins probably wouldn't pass inspection and would be considered weapons, which you'd have to either mail back to yourself, or try to place them in baggage that you've already checked.

Depends on the type of pin. The traditional long pin style will not pass but the ones with two short pins and trhe fastners on the back are just fine. I am actually having a jeweler convert two of mine for that purpose.

I flew from Ohio to London kilted, and in heathrow I changed, I had another 8 hours to go on to Kenya.

security was fun  I had to remove shoes, and get wanded, fortunatly, I don't own a "real" kilt, just a costume one that is close. it has no metal parts, no need for a kilt pin, and no pockets. and I don't own a sporran. so it wasn't much trouble. just lots of looks from people that were like, "clearly he is flying back to Scotland... " and "I can't believe your an American." (when I was carrying the passport)

like I said, I changed in heathrow because it was very very very very hot and uncomfortable. mostly sitting on the pleats for like 7 hours. but the way my "kilt" is made, it has a nice long "sash" that is nothing more than like 3 yards of extra fabric that was not cut off. I tend to wrap it all the way around myself 2 or 3 times until it is more like a real kilt.
picture if you want to point and laugh:
(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y76..._55resized.jpg) [and yes I am working on getting a real one]

but anyways, the seating isn't terrible, but it is just annoying. I also have the problem of not being able to sleep in any type of moving vehicle.

just my 2 cents, then again, it might be completely different with a real kilt.

We just flew through LAX (again) on the way to and from Sydney. The security there has to be the most arbitrary, capricious and rude implementation I've seen in all my travels across the Lower 48 states and abroad.

I worked for TSA for a couple of years in various capacities. Here's what I can offer as advice.

If'n yer gonna wear a kilt, go with something that has no snaps or buckles and it will stay on if you take your belt off. Also, strip every bit of metal off your body. Just take your shoes off before you go through.

sgain dubhs are a pretty sold no go in the states. Ditto pins.

It's a violation of policy for males screeners in the US to screen females and vice versa. This means that most males won't know how to wand someone in an unbifurcated garment.

I flew in my sport kilt a while back but I made damn sure that I wouldn't set the alarm off. Way more comfortable.

When I flew from Amsterdam to Glasgow...and back...no problems

    I wore a 13oz "traditional" with 3 straps/buckles and a deerantler kilt pin.
Before the security check I took off my belt, wrist watch and sporran.

I expected the alarm to go off because of the buckles...and it did. I got frisked and scanned with a hand hold metal detector on both airports, but it took mere seconds. Nothing special, not annoying or embarrassing. I received a harsher treatment while wearing trousers.

The pleats didn't suffer a bit...the kilt after a tough weekend (Burns Supper in Dumfries)
    Picture taken after:
-40 minutes car drive The Hague-Amsterdam.
    -75 minutes flight Amsterdam-Prestwick.
    -90 minutes car drive Prestwick-Dumfries.
    -A serious pub crawl.
    -A few strolls.
-A castle visit with a cramped car drive back and forth.
    -90 minutes car drive Dumfries-Prestwick.
    -75 minutes flight Prestwick-Amsterdam.
-40 minutes car drive Amsterdam-The Hague.

I didn't had problems with the sweep eather, but with a 34" waist I'm not a big bloke...might be different for those with a more impressive belly and or butt.
