Please be very careful when using staples to fasten the pleats of your kilt while ironing. The moisture of the condensing steam will rust common staples in about two minutes leaving stains on your fabric.

The prefereed method is to run a couple of lines of basting stitches to the outside of the pleats. Very fast, very, very accurate & it will not leave bumps when you iron on the reverse side..
Use Upolstery thread that you can get at any fabric shop. It comes in colors to contrast with the color of the kilt. it is very strong and easy to use. Don't knot it, just leave tails to aid in removal when the kilt is done.

once basted, you can move the kilt around as much as you like. You can roll it up when you need to shut down for the night and it makes everything so much easier to get around under the foot of the machine for sewing.

Also remember to put in more than one line of basting stitches so that the middle of the pleats stay in position and not bow when you iron the back side.
