I've rode the Durango and Silverton twice. My uncle designed a Railbus that they used to use to transport workers for a resort halfway between the two towns. (In fact, he later modified that design and built railbuses for the Skagway railroad in Alaska.) If you ever get the opportunity to ride that train, do it. It is one of the very few remaining narrow gauge trains in the US. If you have vertigo or a fear of heghts, however, make sure you sit on the side that will be passing close to the mountain. For a good portion of the journey, the train is on a narrow ledge blasted out of the mountains that has a straight drop into the Animas River of about 400 feet. Since you're a train buff, Alex, I'll see if I can't find my pictures of the train and the depot in Silverton. I believe we've also got some of the Denver & Rio Grande museum in Ridgway. I'll PM you when I get the album set up on photobucket.

OOOOOHHHHH! Thanks for posting the pics. Southwestern Colorado and northern New Mexico are some of my favorite places . . . brings back many fond memories of family vacations growing up.
