There are four official pipe bands in the US Armed services and all wear kilts as part of the special uniform of the band. I know the band at West Point wears the West Point tartan, but I am not sure what tartan the others wear. The others by the way are the Coast Guard, the Air Force Reserve and the Naval Academy bands.

The Army and Naval Academy students are not in the military. They are going to be in the military apon graduation. While I don't know about the Naval Academy, West Point has it's own uniform regulations that have little to do with real military uniforms.

Even with the special groups, I would bet that when they are not performing that special function, they are still required to wear the standard uniform.

Of course as are regimental pipe bands in the UK. Granted a kilt might be pert of their regular uniform but they are not wearing their parade uniform. The same is true with many of the other marching bands in the US military. They have a special parade uniform but they don't wear it for regular duty.

Even the Marines have special uniforms for their bands.
