Mychael, I've yet to buy a jacket, but I have taken on board Hamish's advice that charcoal grey is the most versatile colour. but I do love Lovat Green!

Decisions decisions, what is a poor kilted fellow to do? I too like the green, I really appreciate seeing Derek's pictures, but something to be said about the charcoal. I guess it all boils down what occaision it will be worn.

The charcoal grey is one sweet looking jacket. At first I was look to go with black barathea, but Ham and others quickly convinced me that the charcoal grey is more versatile.

My brother wears a dark green PC with black lapels with his MacIntosh clan tartan and colour-coordinated diced hose, and it looks great. The dark green is also of military importance in this area, as it was the colour worn by Butler's Rangers in contrast to the local regiments of foot who wore scarlet.

While black is the generally accepted color for formal jackets, it is not an absolute. Many of the US military's formal jackets are a navy blue color.

It you went to an event where everyone else was wearing black, you would stand out. But then the kilt makes you stand out anyway.

I thought the colour of the tie signified formality, not the colour of the jacket. My invitations indicate white-tie followed by black-tie for formal occasions, but say nothing about the colour of jacket. Mostly, my regimental mess dress (Lincoln & Welland) includes scarlet jackets, but my navy mess dress is just that, navy. (commissioned navy, but later served in local militia regiment).

The color of the tie was specified, because in traditional civilian dress attire, the coat's color is based upon the time of day of the event - gray for morning attire, black for evening.

I bet one of those bottle green Brian Boru jackets would look great with a saffron kilt and bottle hose! Something else for the list.....

A formal jacket is does not have to be black, the Brian Boru in green is as formal as the black.

    Green Jackets

I have a Prince Charlie jacket and an Argyle jacket, both in green and I wear them to formal or semi-formal events. The green goes well with my tartan kilts (Farquharson ancient and modern), so it works very well. I have worn the green jacket to very formal dinners and clan events, as well as a Buckingham Palace garden party, with great success.
