A formal jacket is does not have to be black, the Brian Boru in green is as formal as the black.

    Green Jackets

I have a Prince Charlie jacket and an Argyle jacket, both in green and I wear them to formal or semi-formal events. The green goes well with my tartan kilts (Farquharson ancient and modern), so it works very well. I have worn the green jacket to very formal dinners and clan events, as well as a Buckingham Palace garden party, with great success.

    I'm with Zardoz,

Think it'd look great with saffron kilt. Just don't know how often would be able to wear it other than a lot in March.
