What would you do if your mother asked you?
We have a Kilt for my 9 month old son. Here is a picture: My wife's mother when she sees him in it starts doing baby talk to the effect of I'm so sorry they keep putting you in a skirt, and blah blah blah about how he's a boy and should not be in a skirt. Does anyone have an idea of how to help her see that a Kilt does not equal a woman's skirt? Thanks.

jordanjm,
A picture is worth a thousand words. Why not show her this thread:

(By the by, you should add your son's photo here.)
Or perhaps these three:

Once she has a context of the kilt as a male garment, that other people (and their son's) wear she may understand.

Have a family "movie night" and show Rob Roy and/or Braveheart... it's a start.
Do you get comments from her when you're kilted in her presence?
Super picture, by the way - and congratulations on the newly kilted addition to your family!

Maybe it's just my reactionary nature, but I would ask her "You have heard of Scotland, haven't you?" I would then explain that the kilt is part of my heritage, and insulting my ancestors was not the brightest move, as she was also insulting her grandson's ancestors. If that didn't work I would suggest to her to look up the words "tact" and "self-control" in the dictionary.

I am still waiting to get my Kilt, but she has already said that "If I want to make a fool of myself that's one thing, but I should not force my son to be a fool."
BTW my wife really likes how he looks in the Kilt.

jordanjm,
One other thought. Take a look and see what Highland Games maybe coming up in your area. Plan a family outing and include her. Go have fun with all your family and she will encounter a sea of kilted families doing the same.
That just might win her over.
Good luck and remember that a kilt is a garment, but your family is your family.
Cheers

Yes, Panache, but disrespect is disrespect. This woman is working at poisoning this child against his father by saying things like "I'm so sorry they put you in a skirt." It sets a bad precedent. If that kind of thing spills over into other areas of life it can later really undermine parental authority. While I don't necessarily recommend my reactionary confrontational stance, the grandmother should at least be reminded that the parents of a child are the ones who make the decisions, not the grandparents, and those decisions should be respected not ridiculed.

What a cute little kilted gent! You have received some good advice so far. Now maybe I got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning but you might remind her she doesn't really have to come visit you or her grandson again if she's going to be rude.

Next time the MIL wears slacks, just say "I'm sorry they keep putting you in slacks".
