I've also tried small surgical tubing, masking tape rolled into a cylinder, sponge, foam rubber... anything with memory that will pinch the pin sould work... heck - a condom would probably work.

Just pin it though a piece of rubber band on the underside of the top apron.

Them rubber bands are a safety thing too.

No clue how it happened, but was a passenger seated in a car when one of my kiltpins somehow unclasped and positioned itself so that the weight of the decoration pointed the back pin straight up from my knee.

I was lucky enough to notice before I put my hand down on my knee for the ride. Would have skewered my palm for sure.

Rubber bands are free, or very inexpensive. Much less than a lost kilt pin or a trip to the emergency room for a puncture wound.

Another solution. Anyone been to Disney World? Ever seen the countless booths, kiosks, shops, etc, etc. for Disney Hat Pins? Normally they come with rubber back that come off over time, so in the infinite Disney wisdom, they came up with Locking pin backs

Small barrel fits over the kilt pin back, then using the small allen wrench tighten it up. You can go forever without losing your kilt pin. Just Google Search "Disney Locking Pin Backs"
This works especially if you have a certain pin you like. why take it off your kilt. You can just leave it there ready for the next time you wear it. Works for me.
