Edinburgh ("Auld Reekie") Pictures #2
I judged this to be an interesting pub sign in the High St in Edinburgh!
Looking down the High St to the High Kirk of St Giles. Despite not having been the seat of a Bishop for over 300 years it still gets called a Cathedral which is technically incorrect.
Looking past St Giles towards the Tron church.
The perils of walking about Edinburgh kilted is that tourists keep on asking you to pose for photographs. Having posed myself I caught Andrew with one of the tourists who asked.
There are some nice fun mirrors outside the Camera Obscura - a self portrait.
And the promised Braveheart photograph! The chap collects donations for a worthy cause, the Anthony Nolan Child Leukaemia trust by posing for photos and this time I just couldn't resist posing myself in my Brithwe Dewi Sant!
These and other photos can also be seen at www.fotothing.com/cleftref

More superb photos Trefor. It's a couple of years now since I was in Auld Reekie and I am pleased to see that the council have finally finished laying the new cobbles - brought in from China, would you believe! The last two times I tried to get into Deacon Brodie's, just seen on the left in two of your images, it was so crowded I could not even force myself through the doorway (I tend to use either The Mitre or The World's End further down the High Street when in need of liquid refreshment!).
As for the 'Braveheart' fellow: he has been there, outside Geoffrey (Tailor)'s Old Edinburgh Weaving Mill next to the Castle Esplanade, for many years - day in and day out, regardless of the Season.

Yes Hamish it was nice to see that the "building site" around St Giles had finally been finished - they were still at it on my October visit.
Have never attempted to get into Deacon Brodie's, as you say it's always rather crowded!
The Braveheart chap wasn't there on the Monday, maybe he has a day off then or was elsewhere. I bought a couple of fridge magnets with him on from one of the shops too. Interestingly he told me he is a cousin of the Princess of Denmark! I would take that to be Crown Princess Mary who is an Australian of Scottish descent if it's true.

Lovely pics, Trefor. Deacon Brodies is a favourite haunt of the lawyers (solicitors and advocates) immediately following appearances in the adjacent High Court or Court of Session.
Regional Director for Scotland for Clan Cunningham International, and a Scottish Armiger.

That guy has the actual Braveheart tartan--the one used in the movie. Not easy to come by...

Both times that we went to Deacon Brodie's, the downstairs was crowded but if you managed to make your way into the back and upstairs into the dining room, it was barely half full.
This was on October 30th, and November 8th as I recall, so your mileage may vary depending on the season.

At least three of the shops we visited carried various items in the Braveheart tartan.
It's not that hard to come by.

I saw it it quite a few places too, including Geoffrey (Tailor)'s mill and shop which is the last building on the right on the Lawnmarket just before you come to the Castle Esplanade.
He wears it as the feile mhor of course.
