I've actually got something similar (bought on clearance at former place of employment). I plan to try a rabbit skinned prototype one of these days. When I get to it, I'll post (with Pics)
If it's done right, I think this would work well.

It's not that small; I just refurbished my horesehair sporran yesterday (sorry; wife's out of town with the digital camera), and it's cantle is 6 1/2". I might try to get one for a buffalo sporran I've been planning to make for way too long....
