Would transferring the remainders to a smaller bottle make it last longer?

Any good liquor or wine store should carry a preserving product. They are small cylinders of inert gas that when released into partly emptied bottles, displace oxygen. This will prevent oxidation which can spoil wines and liquor. And no, they will not alter taste.
