Question for the single malt gurus

My bottles don't usually last all that long once I've opened them but this is a new piece of information to me. I didn't realise that an opened bottle has a "shelf life". I have a couple of special bottles that I dole out sparringly, so how long should a good malt last once it has been opened? And can you do anything to prolong this time? Would transferring the remainders to a smaller bottle make it last longer?

Any good liquor or wine store should carry a preserving product. They are small cylinders of inert gas that when released into partly emptied bottles, displace oxygen. This will prevent oxidation which can spoil wines and liquor. And no, they will not alter taste.
