Sounds like passing the buck. If one or two other people really did have a problem with it they should have had the guts to say so to your face. If they sneaked off to their manager about it he should have given them short shrift and told them they've no entitlement to behave like control freaks by trying to dictate how other people dress. As with Beedee and ccga335 I'm surprised to hear of any dress code restrictions in Australia. You have to consider though looking for a midway course by seeking acceptance of a more traditional kilt as workwear. I wear a black kilt for work, or occasionally a dark tartan, but would never turn up in an office environment wearing a camo or cargo kilt for business.

Yeah, the corporate world is a crushing beast! But, kudos for making the attempt. I agree with ccga3359 that maybe a tartan kilt would have helped, but you're probably past that at this point. If you want to ruffle more feathers, maybe go chat with your boss's boss. Otherwise, move on in trousers...

One day after work I was headed to a ren faire. I got called to the Main School Office, I was the building manager (head custodian) at the time. This school is an african(sp?) centered school. All of the school principal broke into laughter when they saw me. I informed them that the next time I saw them in their African dress I got to laugh at them. They got real quiet. I was beening interviewed by a member of the district Human Resources for another incident, and I told her what had happened. I asked if I had a reason to file a complaint againist them, and she said "Yes." So I guess the schools are getting more conscertive(sp?). I no longer work for that school district.

I agree that there could be a business look they want, and there are probly kilts that could still be, what, "professional looking", I guess? There is a difference between pant styles and looks too. If you wear worn out blue jeans with holes in the kness you are still wearing pants, but is it appropriate for the occasion? Sometimes, sometimes not.

I havent tried wearing my kilt to work, but my fellow mechanics jide me a bit for knowing I wear one at all, and of course they call it a dress. Even women who heard them kidding me today asked me "why". One woman asked if it was for a charity or something.
Cant wait to wear it to the rock and gem show tomorrow. Why? Because I want to.

It will certainly go to work, if ever, on a paperwork only day! There is a policy that mechanics wear issued uniforms, so I know I'd lose an argument. But gotta do it once.

True. Next time I get the urge, I'll ask beforehand and probably come up with a halfway-plausible reason to give them an excuse to give in. And I'd probably go for the MacGregor tartan one that is on it's way. But like I said: I've done it once and that's really the important thing at the moment. Dress at my work is normally very casual; many people wear jeans or casual shorts and t-shirts.

I went to a friend's house after work for a Bible Study and I got encouraging comments there, too. I even got to leave a NeoKilt business card with someone.

The same women who fought to wear pants to work just thirty years ago and faced exactly the same issues guys here are dealing with now? How quickly we all forget.

Well congrats on wearing it once, sorry about how it turned out. If you really want to wear it to work again, I would suggest looking into if your company has a dress code and what it is. Do your research, and be armed with the facts before trying it again, heck even have the employee handbook in your sporran if you want.

I for one am glad I work in office that accepts what I choose to wear.
