Both these pictures have appeared separately on different threads.

The knife pleat camo has an overlapping front apron and is in my opinion definitely a kilt.

The box pleat camo has pleats which continue all round (no it isn't being worn back to front!) and no overlapping apron. It is a kilt like garment to the extent that it is pleated and knee length.

It depends on how you look at it Dread. I don't see the kilt as evolving, I see the kilt as expanding and growing. The principal of the traditional Scottish kilt is still in place and has not been altered too drastically in recent years. What has happened is that the market has expanded the selection of kilts available to appeal to more people. People now have the option of utility kilts, solid colour kilts (I know that's not too new), entry level kilts for under $100, punk kilts, sport kilts, camo kilts, kilts with words on them and funky designs (kilt2), denim kilts, kilts with symbols on them, Irish kilts, Welsh kilts, more world tartans, etc, etc.
Yes, in the past the kilt has evolved from the banket to the wrapped plaid, to the tailored little kilt. The difference from today's changes though, is that as the Scottish kilt evolved it replaced it's previous incarnation. I don't see the traditional wool kilt dying out, that is why I say it is a growth rather than an evolution.
I am thankful for the changes. I prefer the heavy wool kilts, but I have also had my eye on a Freedom kilt for sometime, and will add one to my collection at some point. I got into the market in an $80 4 yard Bear kilt in 8 oz PV. If I had not had the opportunity, I doubt I would even own one kilt today. It was not a kilt I would wear to Burns night, but it sure is good on hot summer days, and I wore that kilt proudly for a long time. I now have kilts I prefer, but that old Black Watch PV kilt still gets the odd trip out.

I am a snob! I prefer the Traditional type kilt. So what do we call these things? Fashion kilts? OK then, it's a fashion kilt as oppossed to a traditional kilt. I still want a Fraser red! and yellow, and hunting.

I don't consider the Tripp kilt as ugly. There
are actually very few if any garments that
I would consider ugly, even if I wouldn't
be caught dead wearing some of them.
They just aren't my style.
As far as ugliness goes, I'd say it only
applies to people. There are people I
consider ugly, and the reason isn't their
appearance.

Think of it this way the underground lowlanders cannow defy their parents without looking like their highland cousins. and if it opens the door for kilts to become normal acceptable daily wear mores the better, just look at tattoos and you can see what I mean when they change from simple sailor, prison, and biker art to a more neo tribal look they became more visible and people began to accept those that have them more readily maybe this punk kilt will do the same for the more traditional and contemporary kilts.

No, Beuth Sim, I'm not calling you ugly. The kind of
ugly I'm referring to is far deeper than anyone who
would post here could confess. (Archie Bunker would
be only slightly homely, and you would never see him
in a kilt, much less posting here.)
The point is...
If we keep our minds open, we can grow beauty
in our hearts.

I am so ugly I could bring a tear to a glass eye.
I am so ugly that I could make a statue cry.
I am so ugly that with but a single glare, I can curdle water.
Ugly is as ugly does. If pretty people can be proud of being pretty, then by damn, I can be proud of being ugly.

Beauty is only skin deep
Ugly is to the bone
Beauty goes and dies with age
Whilst ugly goes and holds its own!
