I know this store and have visited it once or twice. Although nothing like as bad as the notorious Gold Brothers tourist-trap shops on and around The Royal Mile, this one does try to catch the tourist - by selling just about anything that can be called 'Scottish'. Their inventory is just far too big for a retail shop. The Scottish Store does sell kilts and Highland Dress accessories, but this is not their major raison d'etre.
Having just looked for their website, which I had bookmarked, I find that they have changed their web address and they are calling themselves "Colin of Edinburgh, Bespoke Kiltmakers" - but they still list everything under the sun!! I do not know what web address you had for them but they are now at http://scottishstore.com and their 'phone number is listed as: +44 131 225 6111
In June last year, I bought my Saltire Tartan kilt from them without any problems - other than the fact that I had to wait over 12 weeks for it. Still, they were cheaper than anywhere else!! I would not buy from them again, however.

Another instance where it might be helpful if we had locations for posters at X Marks!

Good day Gentlemen,
I am the owner of The Scottish Store in Edinburgh. I am writing this in reply to the posting on this forum. The case involved here was quoted at a 10-12 weeks delivery time and as the order was placed on Jan 10th...I make that onle 9 weeks have passed. It is still on schedule to leave here on time. With regards to the name changing, we feel that the old name "The Scottish Store" was too close to the afore mentioned Gold family chain of tourist shops. We look at ourselves and aiming at a higher class of kiltwearer and therefore instigated the name change to upmarket ourselves. .... although it is still linked to the original website. I do hope that this clears up any misunderstanding and please feel free to visit us in Edinburgh on any future visits. Regards Colin

While we appreciate your comments below, I must point out that when I read this comment, you made 1 comment that I fell may be accurate....we may have supplied your kilt 30 days behind the scheduled date with our apologies. However, I would like to point out that when you say we are not as bad as the notorious Gold Bros., I think it is fair to point out that we are nothing like them. As kiltmakers, we do not make our kilts anywhere but here in Edinburgh.
The statement that we try to catch the tourist by selling anything that can be called Scottish...I do not understand or agree with this. We are a Scottish Store.....how is retailing basically, what we are supposed to be retailing, Scottish Merchandise, making us a tourist trap?
How is our inventory "far to big for a retail shop" ?????? How do you justify that comment? We have a successful website and a 2 floor shop in Edinburgh by the Castle. How can you comment about our inventory?
MORE THAN THAT....YOUR COMMENT ""The Scottish Store does sell kilts and Highland Dress accessories, but this is not their major raison d'etre"" IS OUT OF ORDER. We are kiltmakers and have 1 floor just for the kilts we make, sell and hire. I am sure you can understand my frustration at these comments. I think they are completely misleading and incorrect even though they are your opinions.

About our name.....if you look again, you will find that this is not a true fact...we have not changed our web address and do not appreciate you suggesting this to everyone.
I was not planning to discuss a matter of why we changed the name on the website,....WE DID NOT CHANGE THE ADDRESS OR CONTACT DETAILS.....however, you left us with no option being that you have created some doubt in some minds about our intentions. So read further to understand why we made this decision.
If you note in your first comment, you compared us to these people called Gold Bros. to clear up all misunderstandings that you have created by all of your comments I will explain further about our name.
We WON A LEGAL BATTLE againest them. They had taken up web domain names, 7 altogether, copied our website in full including hidden codes, taken up a free email address and began a path of destruction of passing off, copyright infringement and loss of sales againest us by pretending to be...basically....us. They placed images from our website on Ebay and had all correspondance directed to the free email address that had "scottishstore" in the email address name. These 7 websites ran for over 6 months and you can imagine how many people thought we were Gold Bros....so their plan worked. I in turn, slapped them with a lawsuit for Copyright Infringement, Passing Off, and Loss of Sales in addition to gaining all rights to the domain names in question. In the end, they settled out of court for at a cost to them plus all the domains handed over.
With this in mind, we decided that enough was enough and to stop any future confusion, we decided to re-name the website to the name of the owner of our store...fully understanding that no one can confuse the name Colin with the Singh family name. That is ALL THIS WAS....NOTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING ELSE SO PLEASE DO NOT MAKE IT SOUND LIKE THERE IS SOMETHING ELSE BEHIND IT.

My final comment is that we had hoped you would be happy with your kilt other than the fact that it may have been 30 days later than promised. This happens when kilt sales may have increased at the time. I am sorry that you would not shop with us again due to this but more sorry that I could not find any facts in your comments other than the delivery time and I am very, very sorry that I had to write..but when I read this, I could not see why all of the negative lines were there about us selling Scottish goods and more so...about us not selling kilts as a major part of our business.
FOR THE RECORD, OUR MAIN BUSINESS IS KILTMAKING AND WE HAVE A FLOOR FOR SCOTTISH PEWTER AND GIFTS TOO!
In June last year, I bought my Saltire Tartan kilt from them without any problems - other than the fact that I had to wait over 12 weeks for it. Still, they were cheaper than anywhere else!! I would not buy from them again, however.[/QUOTE]
Thank you for your time.
We still hope that you visit us the next time you are in Scotland and introduce yourself to us.
Linda
