Has anyone made one in "Big Guy" size yet?

My camo material has arrived, The wife has a new sewing machine and is willing. I'm hoping for some pointers for the "46 and north" group of us that wish to make one of these.

I have a 53 inch waist and 54.5 rump I have made 2.5 or 2.75. Once in khaki twill, one in a cotton flannel and one in wool using the x-kilt as a guide but trying knife pleats and on where the material was just cut..

If you have the problem that I have, a beer belly, a strict measurement of shows a rump that is smaller than the waist. you might look at this threat for some additional information:

Also when I measured my rump I held a piece of poster board - thin card board - around my waist. I used this to represent the apron and to bring the tape measure out to the point my waist would be if it went straight down. I also adjusted the apron's width. I think a 12 inch apron on a large guy doesn't look good. I think it makes the waist look bigger.

My logic was:

I wanted the apron 20 inches and adjusted all the other measurements.

54.5 runp = 55 inches - 20 inch apron = 35 inches of pleats.
35 inches of pleats / 3 inch pleats = 11.6 pleats or 12 pleats

I dropped the number of pleats to 11 X 3 inches each = 33 inches across pleats.

55 inch rump - 33 inches across pleats = 22 inch apron.

I kept all the other factor the same.

I also left extra material on the under apron. When In had the completed the pleats I checked the fit. If the fit wasn't right I could add a pleat and adjust the aprons.

I am not an expert, yet, but there are a lot on this forum that will be happy to help.

I have a 50in waist and a 56in rump. Last night I finished a black twill x-kilt using these directions. I have quite a bit of sewing experience, so I did things differently from the directions, but the only thing I noticed is the over apron pleat (big one next to the first 3" pleat) hangs open more than I want it to. I think my thighs are too big.

My thighs are considerably larger than my hips or my waist. More taper! Bigger side box pleats!

OK, question. Mostly for Alan, but if anybody else knows please feel free to give some direction. In the X-Kilt directions it shows to measure 5 1/4 inches between each 3 inch pleat. However, in the birds eye view it shows to measure 5 inches between each pleat. Now what do i do???

Right, this is a little goof that I never quite cleared up.



Forget the "birds eye view". That was just to give you an idea of how the pleats laid out. Focus on the 5 1/4 inches between each pleat, during layout. You can even make it 5 1/2.... You could even make it 5 3/4 and lose all of the space between the inner pleat folds, when you fold it all up.



Nah, don't make it 5 3/4, but 5 1/2, sure. That will result in your waistband being a little bit thicker because more material will overlap up in the tapers/fell, but then that might be worth it for the deeper pleats.

However I found the answer to my box pleats question after looking at my girl Red's tartan fabric last night (right after shoving all her stuff off the dining room table ... ). NOW I get it ... maybe.

I'm gonna see if I can get a few yards of Cali from James.

Either one should work fine..just one caveat on the denim.

If the selvedge isn't nice, you'll have to hem it. Now, go look at the cuff on a pair of blue jeans. Think about pressing that thickness into a nice, crisp pleat.

got it? ..like, ahhh. "fat chance". The stinker is that you can't inspect the selvedge when you buy it on ebay, eh?

OK with that in mind, choose wisely. The F&K wool would probably be very nice.
