The same thing happened with my rugby clubs site. So we reregistered under .org rather than .com and eventually whoever bought it in hopes of gaining some cash from us let it go when we gave up on it. Slimballs.

GoDaddy must have contract obligations with you. If the account was set for autorenew, they should have renewed it, right?

I don't think the squatter had it set for autorenew.
I originally lost it because I had it set for autorenew, but my bank declined the transaction. The fraud alert triggered because it *should* have renewed while I was in Scotland getting married. By the time I got back, it was all over.
So, I backordered the domain through my registrar, and yesterday got notified that it was mine again.
And here we are.
