pardon me for asking? But what do you do for a living and what do you normally wear to work?
I mean, if you went all Prince Charlie it might be not that kilt, but that you're overdressed.....on the other hand if you went all UK, it might not be the kilt, but that you're underdressed. Get where I'm coming from?

It sounds to me that if other people wear jeans then you'd be overdressed in a kilt. You could try dressing it down with walking socks, boots, and a t-shirt.

at an insurance company in a claims department.
usually wear slacks and a nice shirt: "business casual" attire.
She made a huff about the other guys in our department making fun. i've already talked to the guys i work with. already heard their remarks. now i know the guys i work with aren't being jerks about it, just having a little fun, just messing with me.

Casual rarely means "whatever you like" in a business environment. Most large companies still have policies that cover casual days. In fact due to the variety of casual wear and the problems enforcing it many companies are starting to go back to "business attire" rather than deal with their employees idea of casual.
