Not to debate, but the reason that Remembrance Day isn't a holiday is because holidays denote celebration and, well, fun. Remembrance Day shouldn't be that. I don't want people to start saying, "Hey! The eleventh! Let's go fishing!"
THAT isn't right.

CAN/UK meaning Canada/United Kingdom.
soon the Canadians became referred to as CANUKS.

Not so. The origin of the word Canuck is unclear, but it was in use at least as early as 1869 as the name of "Johnny Canuck," a character in the political cartoon of the same name.

I totally agree. Lots of people just look at it as another day off. I use the day to attend the ceremony at the Cenotaph, and it's usually a pretty quiet and thoughtful day for me.
