Help with the Wife!!!!

She'll be alright with you in your kilt. I haven't picked up from what you've shared so far that she's totally adverse to kilting. She apparently is ok with kilters, considering the fact that her (your) son will have ample opportunity to exclaim, "It's a KILT mom. It's not a skirt."

My advise is to make it a non issue. Call it a skirt yourself to show that the skirt word holds no insult power. Just wear it. Show her you are the same man she fell in love with and that nothing has changed in you life but a little more comfort and a little more style. Give her some ownership in the kilt. Let her help you pick out a sporran or other accessories that make it look less like a woman's skirt. Show some manly men in kilts and ask if this sporran would be best or these shoes etc.

My wife thought it was weird at first but now loves the kilt.

Most of all don't let it ruin your enjoyment of the kilt.

They show the various members of X Marks the Scot in Casual, Dressy, and Formal outfits.

It might help her get beyond the whole kilt=skirt thing if she sees a bunch of very different people all looking great wearing kilts from all over the world.

I would ask her if there are any looks she likes. Perhaps she hates casual outfits but thinks that the formal rigs are very chic. Perhaps she doesn't like all the extra stuff of the formal look but swoons over the rugged casual outfits.

If you can ask her help in coordinating your outfits maybe she will come to "get it" and feel like she can be a part of this new adventure you are on.

Keep digging into your wife's family tree and ancestry, most likely you will find a Scots or Scots-Irish connection back somewhere back there..

i,ve got one of them wives to, it is a challenge. try to have a good sense of humor about the whole kilt thing, and try not to take yourself to seriously.

OK Gents!!
I just got the phone call from Sir Robert that all of my other "Gear" had arrived. I will be by his shop tomorrow to pick up the sporran, belt, brogues, flashes, glengarry, etc, etc,... I will be back on tomorrow for some much needed advice and maybe even give everyone a chance to see a newly kilted Newbie for the first time!! Now I know what some of you mean by "Jonesing" for that stuff we buy. My Tank won't be in until next month but the Blackwatch, off the peg, acrylic will have to do for now. Thanks and I look forward to tomorrow as a child at Christmas.

First, welcome to the forum! (a bit late, I know)

Secondly, without a belt and sporran, the kilt can look like a skirt to the unexperienced. I wouldn't take that personally.

It's unfortunate that your wife doesn't seem to share your passion about your passions. That will make hobbies tough. But I'm sure she will come around to see that the men in her life love their kilts and she should be accepting of that fact. Like the rest have said, ease her into this.
