There are 2 books, and a third planned. I have read the books, and I like them, but there is some controversy around them.

Watched the movie at Christmas my opinion I am sorry to say it was absolute crap!! it strayed so far from the story line there is no wat to salvage it in a seaquel. If I were the author the screen play would have been returned with TRY AGAIN on the front page

Many consider the books to have more than a little resemblance to Tolkien's work in many regards. Personally, I found the first book ok and the second one to be very poor. The third book's release has been delayed due to the author not having turned it in to the publisher on time I have heard.

Watched it last night...with my son (big fan) and daughter...and spouse. The two eldest in the room were bored (not the best acting in the world) my son hated all of the stuf left out and my daughter didn't like the violence. Not graphic mind you, more like Hitchcock, letting the mind fill in the blanks, which is a LOT scarier!

I read the books first and felt extremely upset with the movie. The entire third act of the movie was not from the book. The whole idea of the dragon, maturing in a single flight was ludicrous. One of the major themes in the book is about both the boy and the dragon maturing together, though at times at differing paces.

It was actually one of the few times I left the theater wishing for my money back...
