I've always understood that one of the key aspects of a haiku is that one should be able to ascertain the season of the year that's being written about...usually through a reference to something associated with the season; rain, snow, etc.
Makes it a wee bit tougher, eh?

Yes, I think that's true in the original Haiku... but then it's also being written in another language. That hasn't been followed as much in the the western adaptation of Haiku.
January? June?
The seasons pass; we might not.
English class? A pain.
