You don't really need anything like remedial training. It's really simple. Needle is stuck into fabric. It is then pulled out dragging a thread behind it. Repeat ad nausium.
seriously, If your going to take Barb's course it's simply being comfortable with a needle and thread. practice a few times on a scrap of fabric with a contrasting color thread. Try to make each stitch as small and invisible as possible. The secret to hand stitching is consistency. each stitch should be consistant length and tension as every other stitch.
That's why sewing machines were such a great invention. machine consistency. Even when using a machine the "art" is exactly the same.
For Barb's course you will need;
1. A copy of Barb's book "The Art of Kiltmaking". Available through Barb at www.celticdragonpress.com
I would suggest you read through it completely 3 or 4 times. Make notes in the margins, use stickies, mark or dog-ear pages with your questions and comments.
2. A piece of fabric for your kilt. Approx. 4 yards double width or 8 yards single width. preferable 13 or 16 oz. Scottish Wool in a Tartan you like. The amount of fabric is dependent on your size and the style of kilt you wish to make. If you don't have access to fabric call me at the shop.
3. Needles, thimble, canvas, lining fabric of your choice.
4. a wiliness to learn, have fun, and share with your kilt friends.
I'll provide a chair, table, coffee, celtic music, and band-aids.
Barb will provide the brains.
