Good first day! The band probably isn't really concerned if they are a contemporary band. I went to a guys night with some of my church buddy's in my PK MarPat and the firs tthing said was "Hey, who invited the skirt?" It was meant in fun and since the night was a "guy's night" it was in a funny context. The other military guys and the Vietnam Era Special Forces Colonel that was there appreciated the kilt for what it was.
The pleat adjustment is something you learn to work with on a cotton contemporary kilt. It will improve as you wash it and it softens but you will have to tuck the pleats on the front sides in after sitting or squatting.
