I was in the U.K. Army Cadets (REME) but couldn't join the forces for medical reasons when I was old enough.
I'm healthy enough now, but focusing on getting to the U.S. and getting married. Once I'm married I plan to join the forestry service and volunteer with the U.S Coast Guard.

I served as a Quartermaster in the USCG. I served onboard the USCGC Sturgeon Bay for a short time, and then onboard the USCGC Morgenthau for 2 1/2 years.

I have a family history of sea going service. My maternal grandfather was a Gunnersmate in the USCG during WWII serving onboard the USS Manhassett.

My patrenal grandfather was a carreer Boatswain's Mate in the US Navy. He too served during WWII. He served on many Tin Cans.

I spent 5 years in the Air Force, spending most of it in Japan. I don't know that I did anything particularly military-ish. I sat in front of a radar screen when on duty and when off duty I mainly did this int:

    Go Air Force!

I'm new on here so only picking these threads up

I'm 24 years this year in the Terrotirial Army and have been in a Highland Infantry Regiment (with various names) since 1989. I'm currently posted away from the unit with a training establishment. Thanks to changes I can get another 19 years in if I/they want.

I've made a lot of good friends, most thankfully are still around.

You guys might like this wee story about my fathers father.

In 1940 he was captured at Dunkirk but managed to escape while the BEF was still in the perimiter. He was making his was back to the British lines when he bumped into a German, unfortunately the German had a rifle. Queue 5 years overseas leave.

In 1945 an American unit liberated the POW camp he was in but rather than come home he sort of stayed with the American Unit and saw a bit more action.

The unit was being inspected one day by an American General who spotted this figure in british battledress in the ranks holding a grease gun, he approached him and asked him what he was to. "Getting these bu**ers back for the last 5 years Sir" came the reply.

At this point the General got his ADG ant told him to take my Grandfather in his Jeep to the nearest British unit and make sure he got home.

I auditioned for the US Coast Guard Band; but didn't win the auditionand my ashma would have washed me out anyway. My father was in the Army (drafted during the Berlin Wall) and my Uncle in the Navy. A more intresting story was my Grandfather- he was too young for WWI but too old for WWII
