I am 5'10" and, depending on the cut, I buy finished trousers with either a 30" or 32" inseam. Despite my pudgy appearance, I have something of an hourglass shape (OK, more like a half-hourglass), in that I have more top and bottom than middle. My natural waist is somewhere around my umbilicus, but with the right belt, I can cheat that up a bit - but only so far, beyond which gravity and geometry conspire to push my kilts back into a natural resting place.
Barb and others have pointed out that a well-made kilt will flare a bit at the rise to accomodate this, that the narrowest part of the kilt will be somewhere below the top of the waistband. My Standard SWK (Black Stewart) is not built this way. As a result I have to work too hard to keep this one in place.
Despite entreaties by this group not to hem this kilt, I still feel that it hangs too low because it wants to ride lower than where I want to put it. 24" is not for me, not in this model. In my present financial circumstances, my spending money is going toward other non-kilt priorities, or otherwise being saved for something closer to my ideal.
YMMV,

On the other hand, I really like the idea of the solid shadow tartans!

Hey Guys, I am glad that we are talking about this. I have wanted a Stillwater kilt for a long time but have held off because I am 6'3" with a 34 waist. I am glad to hear that some tall guys think that 24" is ok to wear.
I guess it all depends on how high up your waist you wear it.
Thx,
Mike

34" is a very popular SWK size so if it doesn't work you can always re-sell it. I acquired one of my 34s that way. O'Neille

Ditto. I'm 5'11" and was worried it would be a wee long for me. But now I feel pretty confident about getting an SWK . . . soon, I think . . .

I'm 6-0 with a 32 inseam 36 waist. just got my heavyweight saffron tonite! although not a perfect fit in the seat, for the price i can CERTAINLY adapt.
if it's worth a $20 gamble, buy one and if it's not for you, you just pay shipping - $10 each way. just don't remove the pleat stitching before you decide.

I have a couple Stillwater pieces. They have about 2 or 3 inch rise above my waist (above navel), and falls to about mid-knee...which is where I like it... If I am feeling lazy, I'll wear it a smidge lower, and allow it to drop to the bottom of the knee. All in all, I say these are worth more than the asking prices. Comfy, good looking, and pretty well constructed... great for casual wear, or for the times that you may be around folks who don't know the difference between a hefty formal kilt, and a casual piece. I am thinking of getting a kilt in their nightstalker, or a heavyweight in tartan (I don't recall the clan name... but the tartan has nice earthy tones to it). Perhaps a shadow tartan in black for something a bit more "dressy"... just cause I like the look. Typically I don't think a kilt should be non-tartan... but those shadow designs are just neat.

Not quite that bad, Schultz! I also wear a 36" inseam, but if I drop the SWK waistline down just a bit, it hits right above the kneecap.
But, my made-to-measure tank is 27"…

Ron,
Like you I'm an even 6 foot with a 30" inseam (God indeed has a wonderful sense of humor, as I also have a 74" wingspan if you will). I have an SWK Wallace Economy and when worn just above the navel, it hits me mid knee.
Prester John on the other hand is several inches shorter than myself, so he is rightly apprehensive I think.
Really the SWK length should not be a huge problem for anyone 5'9" or over, though as some here have stated, they are shorter and it works for them.

My traditional 'tanks' are made 23 inches and I was a little concerned about the extra inch in the Stillwater kilts but when I finally broke down and ordered my first non-traditional kilt I was not disapointed. At 5' 8" I have no problem adjusting the rise so that it hangs where I want it to hang but then I like a lot of rise to my kilts. I could never get used to something that rested on my hips. I was so impressed with the Stillwater kilt that I ordered another, plus flyplaid for each.
Now, as I've mentioned before I am looking for a kilt that is dyed by natural process as in days of old. Is there any information out there about Scottish wool kilts that are dyed from plant and vegetable dyes? Or is this a thing gone forever?
Chris.

i was reading your post on your kilt length.. i'm about 6'-6'1"... I ordered a 21.5" kilt, as I know I wont like the feel of the kilt all the way at (or above my navel)..I like to look/fit of the casual kilt (but want the more traditional pleating/strapping), so I ordered it shorter in order to be able to wear it about an inch below my navel. Does this measurement sound right? Also, i normally wear 30" lower rise jeans (a little below my navel), so I ordered a 32"er. Does that sound right, a few inches larger than jeans even if I am wearing in the similiar location on my stomach/hips? I also measureed my hip area with a pair of shorts on and got about 38" loosely..Im 6'1" 160lbs.. does all this sound right sir?
