Where in the U.S. can I find unusual woods?
Hi all,
I have been thinking of designing a Sgian Dubh. I like the idea of an Ebony handle, with Nectarine wood for the top, and bottom. The problem is I have no clue where to find Nectarine wood. The one time I saw it, it was because my brother chopped down the tree, and made some planks out of it. Then he used it all in a chess board.

"A veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." anon

You might try http://www.woodcraft.com. There's one fairly near you if you want to go in person... 9891 South 500 West in Sandy.
While they dont have Nectarine, they have everything from African Blackwood to Zebrawood.

Here's a limited list of resources:
The environmentalist in me cannot resist pointing out that many woods like ebony are being harvested in an unsustainable manner. Check out this website for more information: http://www.iucnredlist.org/

GO TO WOODCRAFT!
couple of reasons,
1) if they don't have what you want, they can find it and order it for you
2) My father owns the Dayton Ohio store (#513) and I work there with him
and I had some dignity until I saw this a few seconds ago, if you want some proof of my working there... : http://www.woodcraft.com/stores/stor...&nav=employees
scroll to the very bottom of the page.
have fun!

I have found anything and everything I need at http://www.rockler.com/
They have stores all over, or order online.
Reason I like Rockler, they sell pieces that are pre-cut to length that I might not have the tools to create myself. Like drawer sides, or wine glass rails.
I've ordered the pre-cut wine glass rails before in cherry. Cut to my specs. Just needed to be assembled and finished. I didn't want to have to go buy the router bit for something I don't make but once in a LONG blue moon. So it's handy.

You should at least give Atlanta Butlery a try http://www.atlantacutlery.com/webstore/Home.aspx. They're a couple miles from my house and have a pretty good supply of different types of knife making stuff. they carry scales and blocks of several types of woods.
As for exotic woods, listen to the guys up there.
