You need basting thread. It's available at any sewing shop.
We just did the cover photo for the 2nd edition of The Art of Kiltmaking. Thought you'd like to see it! The tartan in the kilt is the New Hampshire tartan.
Jay will recognize his Project Iraqi Freedom tartan in one of the rolls of scraps in the background.

I use 100% polyester thread, and I've never had any issues during pressing.
Those rolls of tartan in the background and the part built kilt make the whole idea of kilt building so tempting - just wish I was handier with the needle.
