Pitkuna - The Hopi Kilt
Down on the Hopi Reservation today. The front page of the Hopit Tutuveni - the official tribal newspaper - has an article titled "Keeping The Tradition Alive" with a photo of a Hopi man at a loom weaving a traditional Hopi kilt.
Men have always done the weaving on the Hopi, but its begun to die out.
So an adult program coordinator in the Hopi village of Bacavi put together a program to get Hopi elders to show the younger men how to weave the traditional Hopi kilt.
Sadly, no pics of the finished kilts. Just pics of the guys at their looms.
And for me, the gift of learning the Hopi word for a man's kilt - Pitkuna.
No clue how its correctly pronounced...my next project is to find out.
