James Doohan was a fine man. Though he had to have gotten tired on occasion of being identified as Montgomery Scott (Nemoy, after all, titled the first volume of his autobiography I am not Spock; Shatner had a well-publicized melt-down at fans) I have never heard that he had anything other than a kind word and a smile for a fan.

Did you know he'd fought in WWII, and lost one of his fingers to a machine gun round?

A fine man, a fine actor, and he looked great in a kilt!

ETA: According to the BBC article (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/6601221.stm), it was a sub-orbital flight, and his ashes returned to Earth, and were returned to his widow. Alas. It's more romantic to think of his remains circling the world eternally.

If you go to www.startrek.com and look in their comic strip called "The Trek Life" there is a very very very cool tribute to Doohan.
