Edinburgh shops
Can anyone tell me the best place to go to find the largest selection of tartan samples in Edinburgh?
I shall be having a very brief visit there shortly and would like to see in the flesh some tartans I have viewed on screen -- without wasting time going from shop to shop.
The best place would probably be the weaving mills, but I doubt they are situated near the centre of the capital.
Any advice would be welcome.

Geoffrey (tailor)...their looms are in the "cellar" and they have a huge stock of tartans, they also sell bundles of swatches at a very decent price.
Royal Mile, next to the castle entry.

Bundles of Swatches????

Robin is right, but be sure to go to their branch at the top of the Royal Mile near to the castle, rather than their branch towards the bottom of the Royal Mile.

Any of the Highland dress shops down the High Street (Royal Mile) they all have the usual selection of samples.

That was the point in my asking.

Geoffrey Tailor don't seem to stock a big selection, just seems to be the ones they make themselves, which will be the popular ones for their kilt hires. All the shops have sample books from the main weavers, Lochcarron & House of Edgar. Romanes & Paterson on Princes Street will have all these too or if you can get down to Leith (take a No 22 bus on Princes St - it stops at the door) go to Kinloch Anderson, they have loads of samples.

Kilt shops - if you are prepared to travel a little
Scotia and Caledonia Kilts, South Queensferry (a 20 minute bus ride from St. Andrew's Square) is my favourite shop. South Queensferry is a little distance outside Edinburgh but well worth the visit (especially if you want to view the Forth Bridges). I had my current kilt made there and their service is first class. They also have a second-hand shop where I bought a tweed kilt jacket a couple of years ago in excellent condition.
