A bit off topic, but this is the place to pose this question based on the information in the first post.

So this being said, should one look for polyester / rayon blend as opposed to ployester viscose? Or are rayon and viscose the same thing? I only ask because I've been looking for PV and can't seem to find it. I never looked for polyester / rayon though.

Yes, "Viscose" is the UK term for what we call "rayon" in the US.

No wonder all the ladies at Joann's looked at me funny.

    Thanks for clearing that up.

Once at my local Joann's I asked a clerk how many ounces were in a yard of a poly-cotton twill. She gave me a nasty look and announced, "There are 36 INCHES in a yard."

Well, your first problem was going into a retail ladies fabric store.
Your second problem was already knowing more than the sales people.
They know Quilting not Kilting. They can tell you how much the fabric they have is per yard if they read the little tag. They can also usually tell blue fabric from red fabric.
If your looking for P/V Tartan go to Marton Mills.

    Thumbs up

I haven't graduated to a tartan kilt yet, still trying to get the first solid Xkilt done, but when I do, I'll definately pay them a visit.

In my experience, saying they know quilting is stretching things a bit. My wife quilts and I've picked up a fair bit of knowledge by proximity and I tend to know more than the ladies at Joann's. Most have known what the kilt was but their eyes glaze over when asked if there is any wool or PV in the store. I never expect there to be any but I have to ask every once in a while. I have found heavy wool, in solid colors, in some of the larger quilt shops. It is where I get the wool to make my leggings.

I kinda like the fabric store ladies.

I've come to know the manager over they years, and she admitted that most of the clerks look with amusement at men in the store...probably just like gals at the hardware store.

I always get a small amount of surprise at the register when I pull out the company checks.

My mother has quilted for years and as TheSP8 I have a "bit of knowledge by proximity" and often know more than the sales ladies. However, a couple of months ago a asked a sales lady when the wrinkle resistant material was located. She asked what I was making and when I said a kilt she said that she understood. She was a physical education teacher a number of years before and wore kilts in class. She also said that she made her own and with that we began a discussion of kilt construction.

This was a totaly strange experience at Joann's most don't seem to even know what a kilt is.

I'd be interested in purchasing some fabric. X Marks would be nice. How about Isle of Skye? I'd bet that would be a hot seller to the folks here.
