    The Devil's Brigade

Just saw a rerun of the old War 2 movie Devil's Brigade. One character is kilted in what looked like Gordon tartan. In a bar scene he's teased by lumberjacks commenting on his petticoat and asking his date if he's wearing a skirt who does what to whom.

When the bar fight breaks out there's a scene where he jumps off the bar causing his kilt to parachute and they show him wearing what look like white jockey shorts under the kilt.

Guess they had to for the movie...but sure gives kilted Scottish servicemen a bad name.

There is an excellent article on the web site canadiansoldiers.com that discusses "The Devil's Brigade" in regards to uniforms, equipment, etc.:

    http://www.canadiansoldiers.com/medi...il%27s_Brigade

The web master, who is a Corporal in the Calgary Highlanders, if memory serves me, does discuss the Highland attire that appears in the movie, including Richard Dawson's "flashing" in the bar scene.

I watched the movie up until the flashing scene Saturday night. I had see the movie before and knew of the kilts in the movie. But this time I watched with scrutiny. The thing that caught my attention was the scene where the Canadian contingent was marching into camp. There was a shot of three highland soldiers in a line. The one on the left had a plain brown sporran. The one in the middle had no sporran. And the one on the right had a piper's sporran. But after reading the link Todd provided, I suppose the costume department had to work with what they had available. The general public would more likely be looking at the kilts, noticing little else. But we're not the general public.

Thanks for that very interesting link Todd.

Must have been tough on the locals to have 200 of their ladies marry up with the visitors.
