That's sad...but not surprising. Growing up, I learned to dislike the term "inappropriate." It means so many different things to different people, that it is almost a pointless term. Another gem told to kids (and adults) is "it would be a distraction!"
P.S. On an even sadder note, I think Ballentine is a Scottish name!

It is indeed sad but not surprising. What is really laughable is the constant going on about "freedom of expression" in schools. Of course that only applies to
expressions that fit the established criteria of the people in charge.

Sounds like yet another occasion for "The Kilted Rabble" to rise up and be counted. Wonder how much the principal would like receiving 1000 emails about kilts and diversity?

It's a mindset of "Don't let me see you do something that I say others might not like."
Isn't it tragic? Our public educators, exhibiting erroneous beliefs and subsets of belief systems that put our youth (future leaders) in self doubt.
Go, have fun, don't work at, make it fun! Kilt them, for they know not, what they wear. Where am I now?

here is the email ai have prepared...
in English nay less!!!
I am shocked and offended at the openly discriminatory behavior of Jeanne Ballentine, Principal of J.E.B. Stuart Middle School.
She has openly discriminated against a student for wearing his national dress to a school dance. Student Miles Johnson has Scottish Heritage and proudly wears his kilt to events like the dance he was turned away from.
Ms. Ballentine and J.E.B. Stuart Middle School should be ashamed. What does she think the children are learning from her bigoted ignorant behavior?
If student Miles Johnson was of African decent and had wore a Dashiki would she have discriminated against him just the same?
I shutter to think of the other ways she is forcing her personal prejudices and uncouthness on the students of J.E.B. Stuart Middle School.
This behavior is ignorant and offensive. Ms. Ballentine should be fired since she clearly does not understand or embrace diversity and/or cultural pride.
