Thank you very much Robin, those pictures give me goosebumps, even though my family was in Scotland at the time.

I was reading an article recently regarding this monument and Adolph Hitler. Apparently as despicable as he was, he honoured the sacrifices made in the great war whether friend or foe. He ordered that this monument not be damaged or defaced in any way and even posted SS guards to protect it through the entire Nazi occupation of France.
It is indeed a stoic and imposing monument.
